A “Standard Page” is the unit of measure used when pricing written translation work. At BTS, we follow the criteria defined by the São Paulo State Board of Trade (JUCESP), i.e., “one thousand (1000) typed characters, not including blank spaces, or twenty-five (25) typed lines or equivalent”.

Sworn translation, also known as sworn translation or public translation, is any translation performed by a certified translator (also known as a sworn translator, a public translator, or a “public commercial translator and interpreter”, as this professional is officially called in Brazil) who is duly appointed and registered with the Board of Trade of the state where the translator resides. Brazilian law requires any document in a foreign language to be presented to government authorities with a sworn translation into Portuguese in order to be legally valid. In the case of sworn translations from Portuguese into another language, the acceptance of sworn translations by Brazilian sworn translators is determined by the laws of the destination country.
Unlike normal translation, which in theory can be done by anyone, sworn translation can only be carried out by sworn translators who have passed a public exam and have a very specific purpose: publicly attest to the accuracy of the translated documents, i.e., such documents are able to produce legal effects in government offices in Brazil and abroad, certifying that the translated text faithfully reflects the content of the original document.
Sworn translation fees used to follow the Price List established by the São Paulo State Board of Trade (JUCESP). However, with the publication of JUCESP Resolution No. 03, dated September 28, 2022, this price list was revoked and prices can now be set freely. A sworn translation is usually required when you need to submit an international document to a Brazilian authority and certify that the translation represents a faithful reproduction of the original text. In this case, the original document must be accompanied by the respective sworn translation. This is also true when you need to translate a Portuguese-language document into another language for submitting to a foreign authority that requires an ‘official’ translation. Additionally, consular legalization of the foreign document may be required; In other words, the authentication of the document by the Brazilian consulate in the country of origin of the respective document. Without this consularization, the authenticity of the original document and the validity of its translation may be questioned, or even invalidated.
As mentioned earlier, any document that must be translated by a professional who is publicly sworn to attest to the accuracy of the translated text will require a sworn translation. We can mention the following examples:

Simultaneous interpreting is normally used at lectures, conventions, seminars, etc., where a speaker addresses an audience and a pair of interpreters – isolated in a translation booth – translates the message simultaneously into another language. The audience uses earphones to hear the interpreters. On the other hand, in consecutive interpreting, the speaker talks for a few moments, then pauses so the interpreter can translate what he/she has said. Consecutive interpreting doesn’t require any translation equipment, and is best suited for short meetings with a small number of attendees. Consecutive interpreting is usually rather tiring and takes quite a bit longer than simultaneous interpreting. Also, the speaker may lose his/her train of thought, as he/she needs to stop constantly to allow time for the interpreter to translate the message. For these reasons, simultaneous interpreting is usually the most suitable type of interpreting for long events or those attended by large audiences.
The price quote takes into account two basic variables: the type of translation and the volume to be translated. If the text is technical, involving the jargon of a specific area, the price will be higher than for a non-technical text, as technical translation involves greater research and development of glossaries. On the other hand, we offer progressive volume discounts. Accordingly, for large volumes of text, we can negotiate lower rates. It is also worth mentioning that, unlike our competitors, we do not usually apply surcharges for rush service.
